FAQ
Most frequent questions and answers we get.
Yes, you can heal yourself through Sunyoga, that is in your hand. Healing is not just a possibility; it’s a natural potential for everyone, waiting to be unblocked. We provide the technique, but your dedication and practice will bring this potential to life. While we can’t guarantee healing, we can say that, by experience, the potential to heal is undeniably great. We have had numerous people who have healed from “impossible” diseases, and modern medicine has given up the hope of recovery. This is a testament to the undeniably great potential of Sunyoga. If we give you a car, you will only reach the destination if you drive it properly. However, if you drive in the wrong direction, you might end up farther away than when you started.
Understanding that Sunyoga is primarily about internal understanding, not just physical practice, is crucial. Merely looking with open eyes towards the Sun does not guarantee results. It’s about understanding and connecting within. As we explain in our courses, healing happens when we balance all five elements, so we need to focus on balancing multi-dimensionally. This holistic approach to healing is crucial for your overall well-being.
In modern life, we have become too focused on the physical aspects only for our health, but that is not more than a maximum of 1% of our health. The most important is our mind. If we learn how to balance our minds, our healing potential will multiply tenfold. This is a powerful realisation, as it puts the control of our health in our hands. We have heard a lot about the power of Placebo. With Sunyoga, we can learn to draw the full effect of the Placebo effect, which is the power of the mind. At that level, there is no limit to what can be healed. That is called “miracles”. It is called a miracle because we cannot explain the healing mechanism. In our Sunyoga courses, the science of miracles is unveiled, so it becomes a natural part of our process. Understanding the mind’s role in healing will enlighten you about the power of your thoughts and being thoughtless.
Meditation is not just a process but a level of awareness. When we can expand our awareness, intense healing often occurs. Our expectations can block this expansion and healing, so we stress its importance in our courses. By understanding this, you can better navigate the healing process.
The more courses and time you spend with an experienced Sunyoga teacher and in the Ashram, the more opportunities you will have to incorporate the Sunyoga technique for maximum healing potential. We will inspire, empower, motivate, and boost your self-confidence, which will help a lot, but you need to remember that, in the end, it is up to you to do the work.
We already have all the power to heal ourselves from any disease. The problem is we need to gain our confidence. Sunyoga strengthens our confidence in accessing the inert, dormant power within ourselves. Willpower is the guiding light to healing. This force can consciously be built through Sun Meditation, leading to complete healing. The Sun is the perfect doctor. You can talk, and it will listen patiently, and it will give you an answer. No other doctor will do that.
The sun’s strongest rays are invisible and still penetrate the clouds even though we cannot see them with our physical eyes. So, we can still meditate on the sun even if the sun is hidden behind the clouds. Clouds will not stop the subtlest rays from the Sun, and these we can always connect to. When there are clouds, and if the clouds disappear for just a few moments, we can receive enormous energy in just these few seconds because of the deep thirst we have created. If it is entirely dark, alternative photos and eye-to-eye meditations are possible.
Sunyoga is a full-life philosophy on living in peace and harmony on every level, with self and society at large and further with the whole Universe. Sun Meditation is a small part of Sunyoga, the peak of the Sunyoga pyramid, and is the part that resembles Sun Gazing the most. We emphasise that Sun Meditation and Sun Gazing are two completely separate methods with different purposes developed by two great saints and that the philosophies and practices should not be mixed at any point. As beginners, we need to accept the more profound science behind these teachings, which we need help understanding. Most of the practice is done in an abstract, intangible reality that we do not comprehend at the beginning, and that’s why we need to rely on highly realised teachers who have done extensive research in the subtle spiritual sphere already for our good and protection. Only if we can surrender to them and what they teach can we receive and learn. If we come in with the attitude “I know better,” we will never be able to understand.
Hira Ratan Manek has developed the most known sun-gazing technique. In Sun Gazing, you are advised to look directly at the Sun during the first or last hour of sunset and sunrise. In Sunyoga, we never look directly at the Sun, and the mind preparation we do before and the relaxation after are strictly compulsory. It gives us complete protection and should be addressed.
So, do not compare the practices. What is right for one practice can be wrong for another.
Yes, it is possible, but it will be much better if no glass window screens a person from the sun. Also, eyeglasses should be taken off before Sun Meditation.
Sunyoga can be adapted for urban environments, and practitioners may choose parks, rooftops, or other outdoor spaces with access to sunlight. While the natural environment is preferred, individuals in urban settings can still benefit from incorporating Sunyoga into their routines.
While natural sunlight is ideal for Sun Yoga, individuals in urban environments with limited access to direct sunlight may still benefit from spending time outdoors. Practitioners can adapt their routines to make the most of available sunlight.

It is unnecessary as we can harness the same amount of energy by exposing the white part of the eye. Also, as long as we do not look direct, our eyes will always be protected from harm. We want to turn our eyes up, and when the eyes reach higher levels, we can harness even higher energies, and then it is impossible to see the sun directly with our physical eyes.
Meditation is best done on an empty stomach, so ensure you have little food in the stomach for the best effect. After the meditation, it is best to avoid eating and drinking for at least 30 minutes so we do not disrupt the lasting effect of the meditation. If we have to drink, then drink just a little. Avoid bathing for the first 30 minutes and wait until the body has cooled down.
First, the pineal gland receives the electromagnetic powers of the Space element from the Sun, which balances with the Space element of our physical body, and we become thoughtless (we see the sun as a black spot). While the rebalancing is underway, no outside noise can disturb us because the pineal gland has already started to achieve balance by absorbing the Fire element, and we will not feel heat or cold, and the Sun feel cool. All the while, we lose awareness of our breath as the pineal gland absorbs the electromagnetic power of the Air element. We feel balanced and lose the awareness of thirst as we balance the Water element. As we balance the Earth element we forget about our age; we are diseaseless, stress is gone, and our expectations are. All this can be achieved on the first day of Sun Meditation.
People of any age can do it, but children should only do it when parents do and be encouraged and inspired by their practice. There have been 2-year-old children up to over 100-year-old people who have practised Sun Meditation. If you had eye surgery recently, you must wait six months (or three?) before you can start practising Sun Meditation again. You don’t necessarily need to be able to see the sun to do the practice. We have had blind people who benefited immensely from Sunyoga and partly or completely cured their blindness.
Sometimes, we see two suns. This is when we see from both the conscious and subconscious mind. We need to pass through this stage with our focus. This is a test of our mental strength. When we start to see one Sun, we can balance our emotions. Our emotions will support us instead of giving us trouble as before.
Meditation with the Sun is a complete Sadhana, and we can quickly pass through many stages without realising what level we have reached. Even when regularly doing sun meditation, we can still benefit from occasional photo meditation and eye-to-eye meditation. These other meditations help us prepare for Sun Meditation, and when doing them, our progress will be slower and more gradual than in Sun Meditation. This will help us understand our stage and which stages we have already passed through.
The Sun is the highest source of consciousness we can physically perceive, far above all the levels of lower consciousnesses. When we look and meditate with the Sun, automatically, we reach higher and higher levels of awareness. All living beings and non-living entities have been created by the great power of the Sun; they are sustained by the Sun and will ultimately one day merge with the Sun again. Thus, the Sun is the source of creation, preservation, and destruction. Balancing ourselves with the Sun will protect and guide us; this can do better than most parents, laden with expectations.
We are all children of the Sun, which, like a parent, never wishes to take anything away from its children, is happy when we fare well and points us in the right direction when we lose our way. The Sun will never cause harm to any part of creation and will always help us progress. Whatever pain it may inflict on us is for our good. It is a way of trying to direct us in the right direction. It cleanses us; every ego cleansing process will be painful for the ego but never for the soul.
The Universe does not deal with anything good or bad. That is only a perspective on a shallow level of consciousness. At the consciousness level of the Sun and above, there is no day or night. Joy and sorrow follow only the level of the body. What we experience as good is when we can connect (feeling of bliss) or are in the process of connecting to cosmic consciousness, and bad is when we cannot connect fully. We always have a cosmic connection, and the pain we feel is a sign that awareness still lacks some connection on the physical and emotional level.
Everything has to come on time. When we look at the noontime Sun, our cleaning starts higher. We can then receive higher energy and hold it. In the beginning, we can only receive but not hold. This creates many problems, like depression, mental disturbance, etc. That is why we say it needs at least six months of practice before learning to look at the noontime sun in Sunyoga Advanced Course Level 4.
Most of us should practice at low terrain levels at the beginning of our Sun Meditation. On hilltops, the Sun’s rays are powerful, making it difficult for the beginner. Nevertheless, if we are native to the hills and accustomed to those altitudes, we will most likely not encounter any issues. We will be well prepared for meditation with a strong sun, even as beginners to Sunyoga.
Sunyoga can be practised in different seasons, but practitioners in colder climates may need to adapt their practices. Appropriate clothing to stay warm and choosing suitable times during the day are important considerations.
No, it is a Rajayoga, so it contains all the five elements. Trataka focuses on the Earth element level, therefore giving a large risk of damaging our eyes. We need to come and meet a teacher in a course to understand the difference.
